Testing for fun (I missed the first few slides in my notes)

SETI - designing for pleasurablity really makes a differnece ( people let SETi use cycle on comp for cool thing and nice graphics) 3 mill users

Virtual reality at county fair - good VR demo you are a jedi night and hold a light saber.Charged a buck. People liked it but across the way - pony ride $2.00 with hour long line - you can't really touch VR but your can really touch a pony - don't mess with what people really think is fun.

New ideas come from non-traditional collaborations - he can't help us with individual creativity but with group creativity can be helped. Partly natural self and partly nurture...

Creativity comes from putting different kinds of people together...

Green squares - he told us to look at green squares so we only saw the squares - we didn't see the big yellow circles

Advice: Learn to see the work forom as many viewpoints as possible.

Creative is more valuable than smart... if you are in the top 1%, there are only 60 million people smarter than you ...

work and play nice with other people...

Disney Imagineering: - Randy took sabatical to work on alladin

Disneys Alladin First steps toward storytelling in virtual reality - Alladin VR was really R&D effort - this might be the next big thing...

Motiveation - vr is new medium - can you use VR too tell story - call about content not tech - develop lexicon for VR - how does it relate to movie?

looked at VR physical components -

First thing Disney did when building Disney land was build big wall - keep out outside world - same thing done with VR devices

VR disney throughput issue - head gear had to make two part -

driving - 3 degrees of freedom - first user tesing finding 1 degree too much of freedom got rid of speed control -

in 1995 1 mill dollars for computation power - now just graphics card...

Image quality was quite nice.

Randy shows video -

"Search for blue dome" - give them a goal - and character says you better move along - otherwise 90 secs in awe and wonder over

mickey hands as gag (and to avoid prob that cant predict guest)

melon conversation - how could they have this conversation which doesn't acknowledge taht a person on a carpet just flew up? How did they get this wrong - 25 people for 5 years - they were authoring for the wrong medium - this woudl habve played great as a movie -

Randy - this is the same problem as we see all the time on the www - pages that are created as though they are creating for a magazine.

Disney user testing example - most impt in his report was write in final contract that crators will only view it on TV screens..

Alladin primered at Epcot - guest woudl get a lecture on VR how it works - 4 guests were grabbed out and taken aroudn the back (random selection). They did this serreptiously so wasn't a winner vs loser process... very Disney.

Then people on stage and rest could watch

1 mill saw 45,000 experiecned

have you heard aobut VR - yes seen it on Tv or in a movie (didn't get all stats) second stat about reading is probabaly a lie per Randy.

Lessons learend:
guests appear to be immersed
Focu on experience, not technology
VR is overwhelming
guests do not turn their heads much. - this issue was becuae they didn't have any experience to think that it would do any good. So best is to have tracking on from the beginning - Disney solution - cast memeber snaps on head moutn "I need to make sure this is tight enough - can you please look over your right shoulder?" they woudl see and from then on good.

Men vs Women head yaw - staff think men move heads more - but stats show it is almost identical.

Randy talked with staff members - designers did not do this. They helped - head torquing

more lessons learned: found losts of cross gender appeal!

Guest rating of experience: showed that the technology experience its self did not skew on gender

What did you like most - also no sig gender effect.

I would most like to: most want to fly self.

More lessons learned
- Very rewareding for disbled guests
- motion sickness not a problem
- VR must be personally experienced.

Experience is aobut 3 mins...

Immersion

fidelity vs task engagement
consistency vs reality
characters must look at and react to guests

When it is free and a sneak peak they like it - when they have to play $5 they don't like it so much.

Disney Quest:
roller coaster design tool - make it simple easy and clear.

buzz lightyears astro blaster - not much that could be changed - had to be designed right first time... dynamic of driver wants to ram -

-

3 laser guns 1 steering wheel - more like video game than rest of park - skewed a bit male - but suprising finding was teenage girls really liked this violence - it was a rescue mission - worked great for packs of teenage girsl or teenage boys- okay for family. what didn't work well we count down time for colonists to save or get to teleporter - dramatic tension - also win die scenario - 2 endings - one they die - Disney worried - but end was that people didn't care - Randy's conclusion people can distingiush between fansay and realigyt

Ride the Comix - not the best on - light saber like things and you go find super hereos - not a great expeirence.

Guest favs - deisgn your own coaster - rafting.

Rafting - you have actual paddles and blue base inflates and moves to show motion and reacts to where you paddle.. notes that if you say fist pick a captain - the familiy always picks the youngest as captain - if you don't tell them what to do before they have to in the heat of the moment decide this it is who ever is loudest (generally dad but not alwasys). Leared lots bout where people look and what they do - didn't notice mulit choices - draw eye to light signs close to sign see options -

Disney scam - you are in control -

they were sure that they would see differnt things becuase would go further - what this showed and the testing had missed for 3 days was that people really didn't think that there were more than on path through - major lesson for Randy.

Living easels - leave paint trails and that woudl become a snake and come to life.... people wouldn't figure out that they could drag - call touch screens not drag screen - with mickey intro you can drag - 50% got it.

SIDS toy creation - worst user interface latency in joystock bad - when you are done creating your toy you can buy it. - lesson people really wanted to buy take away momento - both parent and kids (also not lower case letters)

Lesson at end - Don't forget the Pony - When you say I'm going to compete with others for fun you are competing with lots of existing fun stuff - Its hard to beat the pony.
